Banned from property of an apartment management firm?

I lived for ca 5 years in a premier apartment complex in the downtown area of a major city. I was always a model renter: mostly freindly with the other tennants, paid my rent on time, kept my apartment clean, notified the staff or police whenever something was amiss or a crime was being committed etc. It was a very good complex and I was overall happy.

However, I was also the first to complain when there was noise, security doors pried open open, smoking in the stariwells, security sleeping on the job etc. Due to these complaints and calling the police on illegal parking in fire zones, although I was overall satisfied with the complex, the management refused to renew my lease and banned me from all of the other properties they manage. This was a few years ago. Was it legal? I feel that it was at least unethical. They used the excuse that I was "unhappy" there, but I was just watching out for my neighbors, home and individual quality of life and really enjoyed it there quite a bit. If I choose to move back in to the area where they have other properties or to the same property, can they legally deny me a lease because I complained at the other property and turned in those who violating the law (noise, proping open security doors, smoking in stariwells, parking in fire zone etc) contrary to the wishes of management? I did not press it at the time because I had other more urgent issues in my life. I reget not seeking legal advice when they denied my lease renewal. It was a burden and hassel to move unplanned under those circumstances.
