Have a great day!

Apartment living is not for everyone. There is the issue of close neighbors, which sometimes means lack of privacy. Not all apartments allow pets, and if they do what if your neighbor has a loud dog that is left alone all day? Will there be laundry facilities in the apartment, or will you be making the trip to the laundry room, needing your roll of quarters each week?

These are all things to consider when thinking of living in an apartment or condo. But, along with the not so great things, there are also the wonderful benefits that come with managed living. If you live in a seasonal climate, there is no snow removal to deal with, no grass to mow and there is never appliance maintenance. Not to mention a lifestyle free of general house upkeep.

So this is the general picture of a tenant. What about how things look from the view of the onsite Apartment Managers? Is it so different from being a tenant of the apartment complex or condo association? There are of course more responsibilities and more headaches when you take an apartment manager job (also known as a resident manager job). But, it is really nice to be in an apartment management position when you live in a managed community. For instance if the general population of your building is aware that you reside in that building, the noise complaints and general disregard of rules will likely be lessened.

You must remember to try and keep the "work" issues to your workday. Let tenants know that it is important your business hours be respected and if they have a problem or need to see you, come to the office when it is open. You may think this will not be easy but if you make it clear, people will be mindful of your off work space.

If you and your spouse are considering a position as a Resident Apartment Manager Couple, the following is a generalized list of what you may be responsible for in this vocation:

· Marketing/Sales

· Financial Reporting

· Maintaining Leases/Contracts

· Supervision

· Problem Solver/Mediation between Tenants

· Collections

· Maintenance/Apartment Turns/Appliance Repair

· Groundskeeping

· Resident Relations/Customer Service

· Weekend Hours, possibly some evenings, some on-call

So given this information, how do you know for sure that taking a live-in apartment manager job may be the right move for you and your partner? Well, if the idea of apartment living is not appealing at all to you, even if you don't have to pay for it...forget it! Actually a good rule of thumb is to look at the accommodations provided and the general job description and determine if you would pay to live there. In other words, in today's economy it is tempting to accept a job based on "free" housing but don't fall into that trap. Remember, what you are not paying for in greenbacks, you are paying for in sweat equity and sometimes that is more valuable!
