Legal questions about security deposits for apartments?

I've been renting an apartment in IL for the past year. Last month, I've leased another apartment in NC. I've spent the past month moving and getting everything situated in NC and cleaning out the apartment in IL.

I have the apartment in IL until Aug. 13 however, I will be leaving for NC permanently on the 3rd. Due to my school and work schedule, I will be unable to return to IL. My plan was to leave the keys in the office when I leave and be on my way. However, the people in the office tell me that I need to schedule a walk through with them. I told them that was fine as long as it was done this weekend. They told me it needed to be the day before or day of moving out (Aug 13). I told them it was impossible for me to be here.

Their response was that if a walk through does not take place, they automatically keep the entire 500 dollar security deposit. Is this legal? I've looked through every contract I've signed with them, and the lease and there is nothing about a mandatory walk through. I was under the impression that apartments send letters explaining what amount passed renters receive back, and why they use whatever money the renters don't get back.
